The “Run” song

Natascha Hagen RunFor those who may not be familiar with it, I am going to tell you a little bit about my song, which is scheduled to be part of the “I used to be fat” MTV show series soon. You may also wonder why MTV found it a nice song for use in its “I used to be fat” show.

The “Run” song is a motivational song. I wrote it targeting the people who are facing challenges in life, and people who are trying to change things in their lives (which is pretty much everybody).

The main message in the song is that anyone can overcome any obstacle in life and change everything they want to change through (reasonable) personal exertion. I also meant to include an undertone that choices matter too, in overcoming challenges in life and changing troublesome aspects of life.

Why the Run song was selected for MTV’s “I used to be fat” show

Song Run on MTV's I used to be fatI really can’t tell why “Run” was selected for MTV’s “I used to be fat” show. The MTV folks obviously have their own criterion for selecting stuff, but I do have a feeling that it was selected because of its lyrics – which bind quite well with the theme of MTV’s “I used to be fat” series.

Just like my song “Run,” the “I used to be fat” show is motivational in nature. Aimed at teens and other young adults struggling with weight problems, it gives accounts of youngsters who have overcome weight problems successfully (and how they did it). It serves to show others that they too can lose weight, and by extension, overcome other things in life. “I used to be fat” highlights the various obstacles youngsters face in their weight loss goals, and how they eventually overcome them (through personal accounts of the participants). That is the sort of message that can be driven home through a song like my very own song “Run,” whose core message is about overcoming challenges and achieving goals through self exertion.

My perspective on the song “Run” in MTV’s I used to be fat series

I feel honored that the folks at MTV have found it fitting to have the Run song on the much anticipated “I used to be fat” show. It really means a lot to me as an artist. More importantly, the fact that “Run” has been selected to be part of this series tells me that people are listening to the song. That is important to me, because when I wrote the song, I just wanted it to be listened to. I just wanted it to speak to people’s mind and hearts, and to tell them that they could overcome what they were trying to overcome and achieve whatever they were trying to achieve (including weight loss, which is the concern of MTV’s “I used to be fat” show viewers). It is not really a song I wrote to make money. That is why, in fact, I am offering the song now as a free download (the first 1000 people who subscribe to my newsletter can download it for FREE) – so that as many people as possible can get to listen to it. I know that having the Run song as part of the “I used to be fat” show will give many people the chance to listen to it. And that gives me so much joy as an artist.

The relevance of the Run song to people struggling with weight problems

One question I have had to answer quite frequently after it emerged that my song “Run” was to run on MTV’s “I used to be fat” series is the one as to whether it is relevant to people struggling with weight problems – and if yes, how relevant it is.

In answer to the question of whether the Run song is relevant to people struggling with weight problems, I think the answer is yes (and I stand to be corrected). It is true, of course, that I didn’t write the song with the people who face challenges in mind as my only target audience. I certainly didn’t write it with the “I used to be fat show” in mind. Rather, I wrote it for all people struggling with all manner of obstacles to the achievement of all types of goals. The target audience for MTV’s “I used to be fat” show, namely people trying to lose weight and facing various obstacles in that endeavor is, of course, covered within that group.

In answer to the second part of the question as to how exactly the Run song is relevant to people struggling with weight problems, I normally say that personal relevance is a “case by case” thing. There are people who feel that my song Run is relevant to their weight struggles, because it tells them that they can overcome their weight problems. There are people who feel that it is relevant to their weight problems, because it tells them, through allegory, of motivational strategies they can use to overcome their weight problems.

Then there are those who find the song relevant to their weight problems, because they can simply put it in their iPods and listen to it as they do their running exercises for weight loss! So the song is out there, and everyone makes out of it whatever they want.
